India batter Tilak Varma recalled how he became friends with Rohit Sharma during the 2022 IPL season, with Rohit’s daughter, Samaira, playing a key role.
The young batter shared the story of his first meeting with then-Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit on Breakfast with Champions with Gaurav Kapur. “It was in 2022 during COVID. We were at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai,” he said on the show. “I was waiting. Rohit did not come on the first two days. I met everyone but could not see him, so I kept waiting. I was very excited to meet him as I had never met him before.”
Tilak said he was nervous and scared to approach him, and a media person later informed Rohit about the Hyderabad-based cricketer. Rohit then immediately called Tilak to his room.
“Then Rohit called me to his room and asked me to meet him. I sat with him and spoke at length, and we ordered food. I wasn’t listening to half of what he said; I was just looking at him, feeling nervous, happy, and all sorts of mixed emotions. I enjoyed playing with kids, so I played with Sammy (Rohit’s daughter), and that is how our bond was formed,” he said.
Over the years, Tilak has become an important player for the Mumbai Indians and India. The young player recently showed his brilliance in the Asia Cup, scoring 213 runs in the tournament, including a match-winning 69 against Pakistan in a thrilling run-chase.
The southpaw will be seen in action in the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, starting on October 29.
