Former India captain Rohit Sharma has been named as the tournament ambassador for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka. ICC’s chairman Jay Shah made the announcement while unveiling the schedule, in Mumbai, on November 25.
Shah wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): “It’s my honour to announce that @ImRo45 is the tournament ambassador for the upcoming @T20WorldCup in India & Sri Lanka.
There can be no better representative for the event than the winning captain of the 2024 T20 World Cup, and a player who has been in all nine editions so far.”
In 2007, Rohit was a member of the Indian side that won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa, where MS Dhoni was the captain. He went on to partake in every T20 World Cup between 2007 and 2024. In 2024, he led India to their second title with a win in the final against South Africa, at the Kensington Oval, in Barbados. The 38-year-old is the only Indian to win two T20 World Cup trophies.
After becoming the brand ambassador, Rohit thanked ICC, and said: “Good evening, everyone. From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank the ICC and Jay Shah. It’s a huge honour to be an ambassador of an ICC event. I was just told that no active player has ever been announced as an ICC ambassador, so this is a big privilege for me and a great honour as well. I’m very thankful and very grateful.”
