India cricketer Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket. However, he will continue to play in ODIs. Rohit went on to lead the Indian Test team in 24 matches, with his side winning in 12 and losing in nine.

Over the last few months, there have been speculations over Rohit’s future in the longest format after he failed to contribute with the bat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the Test rubbers at home versus New Zealand and Bangladesh. He could contribute  only 164 runs over eight Test matches against those three nations at an average of 10.93.

Rohit’s captaincy also had come under scrutiny after New Zealand posted a historic 3-0 series win in India, last year. And that was followed by Australia triumphing 3-1 to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In fact, the only Test that India won during that series was under Jasprit Bumrah’s captaincy. Under Rohit’s leadership, India, however, went on to win the Champions Trophy, 50-over tournament in Dubai.

The 38-year-old notched up 4301 runs in 67 Tests and at an average of 40.57. His highest score of 212 came against South Africa, in the Ranchi Test, in 2019. The highlight  of Rohit’s Test career was the way he countered the seaming and swinging conditions in England, in 2021, where he ended up with 368 runs at an average of over 52. His Test career also will be remembered for his impressive showing versus England, at home, in 2021.

India will next partake in a five-match Test series in England, starting on June 20. Bumrah and Shubman Gill are the possible candidates to replace Rohit as the next skipper.
