Rohit’s retirement: A call in team’s interest by its captain and perfect team player

Rohit failed to make his Ranji return memorable. (PC: X.com)

It was exactly 19:03 pm when the message came. I was on the verge of finishing the pre-match show and that’s when I happened to glance at my phone. The message was loud and clear. And it was about Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket. I instantly broke the story and we posted it from our RevSportz handle. Within minutes, people jumped on us and started abusing. It was natural. It was one of the biggest news breaks and fans were understandably unsure. We knew we were right and just kept telling our viewers that it was indeed the correct story.

In 30 minutes, Rohit made the announcement public. It isn’t the end you wanted to see. But then, that’s sport for us all. He will forever be regarded as one of India’s greatest white-ball players and also one who had some terrific years in Test cricket, like in 2021 in England. And the good thing is he will still play the 50-over format and from this decision, it can be conjectured that he is serious about World Cup 2027.

In England, Shubman Gill is all set to lead India and it will be baptism by fire. Needless to say, Rohit will be missed. As captain and batter. Not the Rohit of BGT but the Rohit of 2021. May be it is the right call. A call taken in the team’s interest by its captain and the perfect team player.
