
Former New Zealand captain Ross Taylor is coming out of retirement to play for Samoa. He made the announcement on his Instagram handle and wrote that it means a lot to him.
Taylor will play for Samoa in the Asia-East Asia-Pacific T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Oman, with a goal of helping the country qualify for the T20 World Cup next year. “Coming out of retirement. It’s official – I’m proud to announce that I’ll be pulling on the blue and representing Samoa in cricket.
“This is more than just a return to the game I love — it’s the huge honour to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family. I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to the game, join the squad, and share my experience on and off the field. Time to get back out there – #685 to the world! CHEEEHOOO.”
Taylor had an illustrious international career. He represented New Zealand in 112 Test matches, scoring 7683 runs at an average of 44.66, including 19 hundreds and 35 fifties with the best score of 290. In ODIs, he played 236 matches, scoring 8607 runs at an average of 47.55, including 21 hundreds and 51 fifties with his best score being 181. He also played 102 T20Is, scoring 1909 runs at an average of 26.15, including seven fifties with a best score of 63.
