After a 17th defeat of a disastrous English Premier League (EPL) season, Ruben Amorim took aim at the culture at Manchester United, saying that even Europa League succeed wouldn’t gloss over how bad his team have been in the league. United’s 2-0 loss to struggling West Ham – to goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen – was their ninth loss at home, the most since 1962-63.
“We are losing the feeling that we are a massive club and it’s the end of the world to lose a game at home,” said Amorim after the match. “If we are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United and don’t have that fear anymore, it is the most dangerous thing a big club can have.”
In the last three months, United’s only league wins have come against Leicester City and Ipswich Town – both already relegated – even as they have progressed to the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
“Everybody here has to think seriously about a lot of things,” said Amorim. “Everybody is thinking about the final. The final is not the issue. We have bigger things to think about.
I’m talking about myself and the culture in the club and the culture in the team. We need to change that.
“We need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave because we will not have a next season like this. If we start like this, if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different people.”
With two games left, United are 16th with 39 points. Last season, the much-maligned Erik ten Hag finished eighth with 60 points.
