India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has created history by becoming the batter with the highest average in List A cricket. He overtook Australian legend Michael Bevan during the Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Maharashtra and Goa on January 8 in Jaipur.
Gaikwad finished unbeaten on 134 off 131 balls, an innings laced with eight boundaries and six maximums. After yet another memorable knock in a 50-over game, his List A average has risen to 58.83, surpassing Bevan’s long-standing record of 57.86. The right-handed batter now has 5,060 runs in List A cricket at an impressive strike rate of 102.20.
The Chennai Super Kings skipper also became the fastest player in history to complete the double of 20 List A centuries and 5,000 runs, achieving the feat in just 99 innings. This was his second hundred of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. This season, the Maharashtra skipper has scored 413 runs in seven matches at an average of 82.60.
Gaikwad is now level with Ankit Bawne for the most centuries in Vijay Hazare Trophy history, with both batters having 15 centuries each. However, Gaikwad reached the milestone in just 59 matches, while Bawne took 101 games.
In the match against Goa, Maharashtra posted a strong total of 249/7 after Gaikwad’s century helped the team recover from the loss of four early wickets. Vicky Ostwal (53) and Rajvardhan Hangargekar (32) added valuable runs at the end. Goa fell short by just five runs, finishing on 244/9, as Maharashtra registered a narrow victory.
