India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has been signed by Yorkshire County Cricket Club for the second half of the English summer. He is set to feature in five County Championship matches and the entire One-Day Cup campaign. This marks Gaikwad’s maiden stint in county cricket.
He will link up with the Yorkshire squad ahead of their County Championship fixture against Surrey next month.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain is currently in England with the India A squad but has yet to feature in either of the two matches against the England Lions. The right-handed batter has been out of action for over two months following an elbow injury sustained during an IPL match between CSK and Rajasthan Royals, which ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament.
Gaikwad excited for the opportunity
“I’m excited to be joining Yorkshire for the rest of the English domestic season,” said Gaikwad after the signing was confirmed. “It has always been an ambition of mine to experience county cricket, and there’s no bigger club in England than Yorkshire. I understand the importance of hitting the ground running, especially during such a crucial stage of the season. We have key fixtures in the Championship and the One-Day Cup presents a great opportunity to chase some silverware.”
Yorkshire’s Head Coach Anthony McGrath welcomed Gaikwad in the club, saying: “I’m extremely pleased to welcome Ruturaj for the second half of the season. He is a highly accomplished player with a well-rounded game suited to the brand of cricket we want to play. He will bring added stability to our batting line-up and also has the ability to accelerate when needed. He’s an exciting talent who is highly regarded across the cricketing world.”
Gaikwad is currently part of the India A squad. He has not been selected in either of the games against England Lions, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhimanyu Easwaran—both in the main squad—preferred at the top.
Several Indian players, including Ishant Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Karun Nair, Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, have gained valuable experience through county stints. Gaikwad will be hoping to follow in their footsteps and make a strong impression.
