Chennai Super Kings’ Dewald Brevis and Mumbai Indians’ new recruit, Sherfane Rutherford showcased their brilliance as finishers for Pretoria Capitals against MI Cape Town on Wednesday, December 31, in the ongoing SA20 tournament.
Brevis had a quiet start to the tournament, but his knock against MI Cape Town was fearless. He stayed unbeaten and scored 36 runs off 13 balls. His innings included one boundary and four sixes at a strike rate of 276.92.
Rutherford, on the other hand, who has been traded to Mumbai Indians for INR 2.6 crore ahead of the upcoming IPL 2026, smashed an unbeaten 47 runs off 15 balls. He hit six sixes at a destructive strike rate of 313.33.
The duo stitched together a breathtaking late unbeaten partnership, adding 86 runs in just 27 balls, completely shifting the momentum of the innings. Their efforts helped Pretoria Capitals post a massive total of 220/5. For MI Cape Town, Kagiso Rabada picked up two wickets but had an expensive outing, conceding 48 runs in four overs.
In reply, MI Cape Town got a decent start with contributions from Rassie van der Dussen (28), Ryan Rickelton (33), ReezaHendricks (18) and Nicholas Pooran (25). However, Rutherford turned the game on its head with the ball, dismantling MI Cape Town’s batting line-up by picking up four crucial wickets, which restricted them to just 135 runs in 14.2 overs.
Rutherford’s all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
