The six SA20 franchises have finalised their retentions ahead of the 2025 season, with a few familiar names continuing in leadership roles. Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals have kept faith in their captains — Faf du Plessis, Rashid Khan and David Miller respectively — for the upcoming edition of the tournament.

However, some notable omissions have raised eyebrows. Aiden Markram and Keshav Maharaj, who led Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban’s Super Giants last season, were not retained by their teams.

MI Cape Town leads the retention tally with seven players confirmed, including star overseas names like Trent Boult and Nicholas Pooran. In contrast, Pretoria Capitals opted to retain just three — Will Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford, and Andre Russell — ahead of the auction.

Teams were allowed to keep up to six players, with a limit of three local and three international cricketers. Additionally, each side has made one wildcard pick, which could be either a local or overseas player who was part of the squad last season.

Among the players likely to feature in the auction pool are marquee names like Dewald Brevis, Kwena Maphaka, Lungi Ngidi, Wiaan Mulder, Quinton de Kock, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Anrich Nortje will also be up for grabs.

The retention window closed on 18 July, and with R131 million collectively available across the franchises, 84 auction spots remain to be filled. The player auction is scheduled for 9 September in Johannesburg.
