Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar has praised England batter Joe Root on becoming the second-highest scorer in Test cricket. He has made 13,543 runs in 158 Test matches so far. That means Root is 2,378 runs behind the Indian maestro’s world record of 15,921 runs in 200 matches.
Root was remarkable in the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy which ended in a draw. The former England skipper was the leading scorer for his team with 537 runs in nine innings at an average of 67.12.
During an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Tendulkar recalled being impressed by Root’s heroics in his debut Test against India in Nagpur in 2012. He said he felt back then that one day he would lead England.
“To have gone past 13,000 runs is a remarkable achievement, and he’s still going strong,” he said. “When I saw him for the first time in Nagpur in 2012 during his debut Test, I told my teammates that they were watching the future captain of England. What impressed me most was the way he was able to assess the wicket and how he rotated the strike. I knew at that very moment that he would be a big player.”
The England batter is currently preparing for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. In this format, Root has scored 7,126 runs in 180 matches at 49.14.
