
Former Sri Lankan off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been charged by the Hambantota High Court in connection with the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL) for allegedly attempting to persuade a fellow player to engage in match-fixing.
Senanayake featured in only one Test match, making his debut on 31st December 2013 against Pakistan, where he failed to take a wicket. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against South Africa on 20th January 2012. In total, he played 49 ODIs, taking 53 wickets at an average of 35.35, with an economy rate of 4.76 and a strike rate of 44.4. His best ODI bowling figures were 4/13.
His T20 International debut came against Pakistan on 1st June 2012. He represented Sri Lanka in 24 T20Is, claiming 25 wickets at an average of 21.96, an economy rate of 6.77, and a strike rate of 19.4. Senanayake also featured in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
According to local media reports, national-level cricketer Tharindu Ratnayake, who was representing Colombo Kings at the time, was the player approached.
“Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing,” stated a report in Sri Lanka’s Daily Mirror.
