Chennai Super Kings (CSK) new recruit Sanju Samson is excited beyond words to share the dressing room with his idol, MS Dhoni, for the entire season after having played against him in the IPL since his debut with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2013.
In a historic player swap, Samson was brought in by CSK for Rs 18 crore in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, who moved to RR. At CSK, he will reunite with his childhood hero and former India team-mate, Dhoni.
The Kerala-based cricketer recounted his first interaction with the five-time IPL-winning captain.
“There’s one person there, everyone knows him. The person called MS Dhoni. I first met him when I was 19 and had been selected in the Indian team for the first time. I went on a UK tour and Mahi Bhai was the captain. I saw him for the first time and interacted with him for 10–20 days. After that, I used to see him during the IPL. There would always be a crowd in front of him, five people here, 10 people there. I used to think, ‘OK, I can’t meet him here; I will have to meet him separately,’” said Samson in a video shared by CSK on their YouTube channel.
Samson’s long-awaited wish to spend more time with Dhoni will come true in the new season.
“I had such a desire. Destiny has brought me to play with him in one dressing room for a couple of months. I’m very excited to meet and interact with him, sit and have breakfast with him, practise with him, play with him. Wow! Just thinking about it makes me very happy,” he added.
The addition of Samson is seen as part of CSK’s long-term vision and their preparation for life after Dhoni decides to hang up his boots.
