Indian squash stalwart Saurav Ghosal has abandoned his comeback bid and is set to step away from professional sports for good, following a serious diagnosis related to his right hip. Months after coming out of retirement and lifting a PSA Challenger title in Sydney, Ghosal has accepted that the extent of degeneration in his hip makes long-term competition, especially a run to the 2028 Olympics, virtually impossible.

Medical assessments have revealed that his right hip has suffered significant degeneration, categorised as early-stage arthritis of the bone. Experts have informed him that while the condition can be managed temporarily — with careful monitoring and rehabilitation over the next 12 to 18 months — continuing at a high-performance level for the next three and a half years is not medically feasible. The damage is irreversible, and prolonged competitive intensity could worsen the condition beyond repair.

Given the uncertainty of his physical future and the inability to commit fully to a long-term Olympic campaign, Ghosal has concluded that continuing his professional journey serves little purpose. This difficult but necessary decision effectively ends the competitive chapter of one of Indian squash’s most influential careers. Speaking to RevSportz about how is he feeling, he said, “I’m alright. Keeping my mind busy.”

Having been the first Indian male squash player to break into the world’s top 10 and a multiple-time Asian Games medallist, Ghosal’s contribution to Indian sport spans over two decades of excellence, leadership, and legacy. His brief return in 2025 was a reminder of his enduring class and competitiveness, but the body’s limitations have ultimately brought the curtains down on an extraordinary journey.
