Brisbane Heat have secured the services of one of world cricket’s most fearsome pacers, Shaheen Shah Afridi, for the upcoming Big Bash League 2025 (BBL 2025) season.

This marks Afridi’s first stint in the BBL, joining the likes of fellow Pakistani stars Shadab Khan, Yasir Shah, and Fakhar Zaman, who have previously represented the Heat. The 25-year-old left-armer, who debuted internationally as a teenager, has since become a key figure in Pakistan’s pace attack with a flourishing career across formats.

Afridi has played 222 T20 matches, taking 310 wickets at an average of 20.99 and an economy of 7.95. A former Pakistan T20I captain, he has already led Lahore Qalandars to multiple PSL titles. He brings leadership qualities as well to the table.

Shaheen excited for first BBL stint

Sharing his excitement about the move, Afridi said in a video released by the franchise: “Bowling at the Gabba is always special, and I’m looking forward to meeting all the Heat fans this summer.”

Afridi was selected as a Platinum pick in the first round of the BBL draft, with the veteran Kiwi batter Colin Munro picked in the second round, having already been pre-signed by the Heat.

Other notable moves in the BBL draft include Babar Azam signing with Sydney Sixers, Mohammad Rizwan and Hassan Khan joining the Melbourne Renegades, and Haris Rauf being retained by the Melbourne Stars. Meanwhile, Shadab Khan is set to feature for his fourth BBL side, joining Sydney Thunder via a second-round trade. Adelaide Strikers have roped in Hasan Ali, who’s been in sensational form with the ball in the 20-over format.
