Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi has been ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) season due to a knee injury. Brisbane Heat confirmed that, after consultation with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the pacer has decided to return to Pakistan, where he will undergo rehabilitation.

“After consulting with the Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical staff during the past 24 hours, it was agreed that Afridi would cut short his Big Bash League stint to return home for further treatment ahead of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup,” said a statement from Brisbane Heat.

The left-arm pacer picked up the injury during the game against the Adelaide Strikers on December 27, when he limped off the field. With the World Cup on the horizon, the PCB will not be taking any risks with their pace-bowling spearhead.

“I’m massively thankful to the Brisbane Heat team and fans for showering me with immense love and support,” Afridi wrote on his social media handle. “Due to an unexpected injury, I have been called back by the PCB and will have to undergo rehabilitation. Hopefully, I will be back on the field soon. Meanwhile, I will be cheering for the amazing team.”

Afridi ends his four-match stint in the tournament with just two wickets to his name, at an economy rate of 11.19.

Before Afridi picked up the injury, the T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka was announced, with the exception of Shadab Khan, and all BBL-bound players were left out.

Pakistan are scheduled to play three T20Is in Sri Lanka, followed by a home series against Australia, as part of their preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026. They will begin their World Cup campaign in Colombo on February 7.
