Cricket Australia (CA) have announced their women’s national contracts for the 2025/26 season, with a few surprises in the 18-player list. One major talking point was the absence of veteran all-rounder Jess Jonassen. A six-time World Cup winner and one of Australia’s most experienced cricketers, Jonassen has not played for the national side since December 2023.
Her exclusion from the new contract list caught the attention of fans and cricket experts alike. Jess has played 6 Tests, 93 ODIs, and 105 T20Is for Australia. Australia selector Shawn Flegler spoke about the decision and made it clear that Jonassen still remains in the selectors’ minds. “While Jess Jonassen has not been included on this year’s list, we’re always keeping an eye on players outside of the squad, and she is no exception,” Flegler said.
Jonassen’s last appearance for Australia came during the Wankhede Test against India in December 2023. While she has been out of the international scene since then, she continues to perform well in various franchise leagues, including the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
In contrast, several young names have been rewarded for their recent performances and promise. Tess Flintoff and top-order batter Georgia Voll are among the new faces to receive a national contract.
“Tess is an exciting young player who we can see having a long future in the green and gold,” said Flegler. “Having overcome injury, we’re looking forward to seeing her fit and firing throughout summer which adds further depth to our pace-bowling stocks.”
He also praised Voll for her impressive rise. “Georgia has made a sensational start to her international career, showing her immense talent from the onset and playing a pivotal role for the team in the absence of Alyssa Healy at the top of the order.”
