The International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) has confirmed that 15 shooting events will feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, following the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) approval. The IOC has also reaffirmed its commitment to the sport by awarding it 340 athlete quota places—matching the number allocated for Paris 2024.
All changes proposed by the ISSF were accepted by the IOC Sports Department, a reflection of the strong collaboration between the two organizations under the guidance of ISSF President Luciano Rossi and Secretary General Alessandro Nicotra Di San Giacomo.
“We are extremely pleased and happy to have our 15 shooting events confirmed in the Olympic Programme for LA28,” said ISSF President Luciano Rossi. “We thank and express our sincere gratitude to the IOC for their continued faith and trust in us as an Olympic Sport, as we continue to develop and grow the appeal and popularity of shooting disciplines within the Olympic ethos, as shown in the event-based evaluation of shooting at Paris 2024 and look forward to a great Games in 2028.”
Key format updates will take effect on January 1, 2026, giving athletes time to adjust during the LA28 qualification cycle. Notably, finals for shotgun and the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol events will now feature eight athletes instead of six. This brings them in line with all other individual finals and promotes broader representation among National Olympic Committees.
In a notable change for the 50m rifle 3 positions final, only the standing position will be used. The qualification round, however, will still include kneeling, prone, and standing components. This adjustment was made with sports presentation in mind, as the previous format posed challenges for broadcasters and commentators. The streamlined approach is expected to be more accessible to new viewers.
Mixed team event finals are also evolving: rather than holding separate gold and bronze medal matches, all four top teams will compete together in a single final using an elimination-style format. Qualification rounds for all events will remain unchanged from Paris 2024, and individual 10m air rifle, 10m air pistol, and women’s 25m pistol final formats will stay the same.
Importantly, these updates do not require new facilities, technology, or additional technical officials. The ISSF plans to test the new formats throughout 2025 to ensure a smooth transition.
The confirmed events for LA28 include men’s and women’s 10m air rifle, 50m rifle 3 positions, 10m air pistol, skeet, and trap, along with men’s 25m rapid fire pistol, women’s 25m pistol, and mixed team events in 10m air rifle, 10m air pistol, and trap.
ISSF Sport Director Peter Underhill noted: “Following this decision by the IOC, our teams now look forward to working with the IOC Sports Department and LA28 in a continued spirit of great collaboration, as we endeavour to further enhance event delivery and sport presentation in Los Angeles. We can commence detailed planning now with confidence.”
