India fought back strongly after early hiccups on Day 1, but it was England who edged the day. After opting to bowl, the hosts found early reward as Chris Woakes delivered a probing spell, dismissing KL Rahul early. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair then fought back, only for Brydon Carse to strike late in the opening session. Jaiswal looked set for a ton, but a loose cut off Ben Stokes ended his promising knock on 87, triggering a mini-collapse. Despite that, Shubman Gill’s composed hundred and a stabilising stand with Ravindra Jadeja ensured India reached stumps without further damage.
Here’s what Jaiswal had to say after the day’s play:
On missing out on a century
“I was batting well and had played myself in. Of course it was frustrating, but it’s a part of the game. I’ll learn from it and move forward.”
He admitted the lack of strike may have played a part in the lapse. “I didn’t get much strike for a while. Just faced 10 balls in 6 overs before getting out. But still, I should’ve been more careful.”
On partnerships and mindset
“We’re enjoying the batting. In the dressing room, we talk about playing session by session. That helps us stay in the moment.”
On Shubman Gill’s knock
“I think he has been amazing. The way he batted, took control. Also as a captain, he’s been calm and confident. We’re all trying to build a big score around him.”
On put to bat first
“I’m always prepared for batting first. It’s about adapting to the situation. The conditions weren’t easy but we were ready.”
On pitch comparison to Leeds
“There was more seam and bounce in Leeds than here. This wicket is a bit slower. We need to adapt accordingly.”
Despite missing out on a hundred, Jaiswal’s fluent 87 ensured India stayed in the contest — a knock full of flair, but one that left the batter visibly unsatisfied.
