Shreyas Iyer has opened up about his omission from Team India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, starting on September 9.

Iyer’s exclusion raised many eyebrows, as he was not named even in the reserves. The Mumbai batter has been among the consistent performers in domestic cricket across formats while also shining in the IPL, both as captain and batter, for Punjab Kings.

In 2024, he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title. Earlier this year, he guided Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final. With the bat, he scored 604 runs at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 175.07. His last T20I appearance came in December 2023.

Speaking on a podcast for IQOO India’s YouTube channel, Iyer admitted it is tough to accept when you feel you deserve a place.

“It is only frustrating when you know that you deserve to be in the team, in the playing XI. At that time, it is frustrating. But at the same time, when you know that someone is performing and playing consistently for the team and bringing their best, you support them. And eventually, the goal is for the team to win. When the team is winning, everyone is happy,” Iyer said.

Iyer also stressed the importance of integrity and hard work, even when recognition does not come.

“But as I keep talking about integrity, even if you don’t get a chance, you have to make sure that you do your work ethically. It’s not like you do it only when someone is watching. Even when no one is watching, you have to keep doing your work,” he added.
