After Punjab Kings’ high-scoring clash against Delhi Capitals on May 24 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer remarked that the Indian Premier League (IPL) surpasses even the English Premier League (PL) in terms of competitive intensity.

Iyer made the statement following Delhi Capitals’ successful chase of a daunting 207-run target. He had earlier contributed significantly with the bat, coming in at 55/2 in the sixth over and scoring a fluent 53 off 34 balls. His innings, which included five boundaries and two sixes, played a key role in taking Punjab Kings to 206/8 — a total that ultimately fell short.

Speaking after the defeat, Iyer praised the quality of the IPL, saying, “I believe it’s more competitive than even the Premier League. Every team is well-balanced, and it’s important to maintain a calm and positive mindset. You can’t afford to get caught up in setbacks; focus on the present, and tomorrow is always a new day.”

Despite their strong batting performance, Punjab Kings couldn’t defend the target as Sameer Rizvi’s explosive 58\* off 25 balls guided Delhi Capitals to victory with three balls to spare. Reflecting on the loss, Iyer pointed to his side’s poor execution with the ball.

“We lacked discipline with our bowling,” Iyer admitted. “We had assessed the pitch in the first innings and decided to bowl hard lengths and target the stumps. But we veered from that plan, trying bouncers when it wasn’t necessary. It’s a valuable lesson for the team.”
