Shreyas Iyer is likely to be out of competitive cricket for two months after suffering an internal injury during the third ODI between India and Australia in Sydney on October 25, RevSportz understands. This rules him out of the three-match home ODI series against South Africa in November-December. His participation in the ODI series against New Zealand that starts on January 11 is also touch and go, given that he would be short of match practice. More importantly, however, India’s ODI vice-captain is steadily recovering.
It is learnt that Shreyas underwent interventional trans-catheter embolisation to stop the internal bleeding after suffering a laceration of his spleen. It is a standard procedure where a small catheter is passed through the artery and the bleeding area is blocked. It is done to arrest the bleeding area anywhere in the body. The procedure is done in an operation theatre under image control. The injury happened when Shreyas dived to take Alex Carey’s catch.
On Tuesday, the BCCI put out a statement on Shreyas’ injury which said: “Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding on 25th October during the third ODI against Australia.”
The statement added: “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress.”
According to reports, the BCCI is making travel arrangements for Shreyas’ sister, Shresta, to Sydney to join and help the player out there.
