Shreyas Iyer has been taken to the hospital in Sydney after the Indian batter injured himself while taking a catch during the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Shreyas, after completing the catch of Alex Carey, was seen holding his lower left rib as he walked off the field with team doctor Kamlesh Jain.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding,” a BCCI spokesperson confirmed. “He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.”
During the innings break, a stretcher was also called to the Indian dressing room but was taken out as it wasn’t required. However, after a while, with the pain not subsiding, Shreyas was taken to the hospital for further evaluation of his injury. He will undergo scans to determine the extent of the injury to his lower left rib.
With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli cruising in the chase, having hit half-centuries, Shreyas’s batting won’t be required. But it brings back memories of India taking on Australia at the same venue during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year when Jasprit Bumrah was taken to the hospital due to a lower back injury. Exact details of the extent of Shreyas’s injury are awaited.
