India Test captain Shubman Gill was admitted to Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday after experiencing neck pain during day two of the ongoing Test at Eden Gardens.
Gill, wearing a neck brace, was stretchered off the ground after experiencing discomfort in his neck. The incident occurred on the fifth ball of the 35th over of India’s innings. Immediately after playing a sweep shot, he stepped away from the pitch. Following an assessment by the medical team, he was taken off the field and did not return for the remainder of the day. After the close of play, India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, provided an update on Gill.
“Bad timing,” said Morkel. “It was just unfortunate this morning that he woke up with a stiff neck, which he carried into what was a crucial day for us.” Another partnership with Gill at the crease, he added, was what the team had needed at the time. “What India got instead was another new batter at the crease.”
Sources close to RevSportz indicated that Gill is expected to remain in hospital overnight under observation.
The 26-year-old Punjab-based cricketer has been playing continuously since February. This injury has cast doubt over his participation in the second Test, scheduled to be played in Guwahati from 22 November.
An official update from the BCCI on the extent of the India captain’s injury is expected on Sunday.
