Shubman Gill is steadily improving and is on his way to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bangalore for neck rehabilitation, it is learnt. After missing the ongoing Guwahati Test, Gill has also been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against South Africa starting on November 30. Whether he can feature in the five-match T20I series against the Proteas that follows will be based on his progress. The T20I series commences on December 9.

On Sunday, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee announced a 15-member squad for the ODIs against South Africa and, in the regular skipper’s absence – vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also out injured – KL Rahul has been given the stop-gap role. As RevSportz has reported, Gill has no nerve injury and it’s not serious either. According to the specialists, his issue is cured by adequate rest, but injections are used to quicken the recovery process.

Gill sustained a neck injury while batting in the first innings of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens. As the pain became severe later that day, he was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata. The 26-year-old, India’s Test and ODI captain, was discharged about 24 hours later and he has been recovering steadily since.

On the eve of the second Test, the BCCI put out a media advisory confirming his unavailability. It stated: “Team India captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati.”

The release added: “Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. He travelled to Guwahati on 19th November, 2025. Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury.

“Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the 2nd Test in Gill’s absence.”
