Shubman Gill is pain free and his participation in the upcoming T20I series against South Africa that follows the three ODIs is not ruled out. India’s Test and ODI captain has checked in at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for rehab, where he is expected to undergo fitness tests.
The five-match T20I series starts on November 9 and there’s a chance that Gill might be available towards the latter half for the last three or two matches. Usually the selection committee names squads for ODIs and T20Is at the same time when they follow each other. This time, though, the T20I squad was not announced and Gill’s injury was a reason. It’s likely that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is waiting to hear from the specialists at the CoE before announcing the squad.
Gill had retired hurt during India’s first innings in the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens. He was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata and although he was discharged in a day, the pain didn’t subside completely. He missed the second Test in Guwahati and then the ongoing ODI series. In terms of recovery though, Gill has progressed steadily and it’s now a matter of time before he is allowed to play again. Whether that is in the T20I series against the Proteas or the white-ball assignments against New Zealand next month that needs to be seen.
