Rohit Juglan in Perth
Apart from Virat Kohli, a lot of the focus was on Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. They spent a lot of time in the nets against different kinds of bowling. Shreyas was his aggressive self, while Gill would often seek Kohli’s counsel after playing certain shots.
After his now-customary extended net, Gill had a 15-minute chat with Rohit Sharma, his predecessor as India’s ODI captain.
They ventured towards the pitch, standing next to the rope that has been used to mark off the square at the Optus Stadium. Afterwards, Gill had a quick chat with Gautam Gambhir as well before sitting down with Rohit and Kohli. Yashasvi Jaiswal soon joined them and the mood was light-hearted, with anecdotes shared and plenty of laughter.
As for Rohit, he went through his fitness drills, did his catching and then batted against some throwdowns. He largely kept to himself though, perhaps conscious of the fact that his is now Gill’s team and he is no longer at the heart of it.
KL Rahul, who will double up as India’s wicketkeeper, was one of the first to hit the nets, practising his full array of shots against pace and spin. With one more practice session to come before the match on Sunday, this looked a team very much at ease and confident in their ability.
