India’s newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill intends to adopt the “calmness” that his predecessor Rohit Sharma brought to the dressing room as he prepares to lead the team in the 50-over format, starting with the upcoming tour of Australia later this month.

Having played a lot under Rohit’s leadership, Gill highlighted the qualities of the former captain that he aims to embrace as he takes over the reins.

“There are so many qualities that I have inherited from Rohit Bhai; one is the calmness that he possesses, and the kind of friendship that he fosters among the group is something I aspire to. These are the qualities I want to take from him,” Gill said on the eve of the Delhi Test.

The squads for the Australia tour were announced soon after the completion of the first Test between India and the West Indies in Ahmedabad. Gill, who was aware of the captaincy shift, is excited to lead his team in the one-dayers, months after his appointment as Test captain.

“It was announced in the middle of the Test match, but I found out a little before that,” he said. “Obviously, it’s a big responsibility and an even bigger honour. I’m very excited to lead my country in that format. And yes, the last few months have been very exciting for me.”

Speaking about his working relationship with head coach Gautam Gambhir, Gill said: “Our relationship is good. We have conversations about how to make players feel secure. Also, we talk about preparing a pool of fast bowlers.”

India will take on the West Indies for the second and final Test of the series, starting on 10 October. After the series, they will fly out to Australia for the limited-overs series, which begins on 19 October.
