After shattering a plethora of records with his sensational knock of 269 at Edgbaston on Day 2 of the second Test, Shubman Gill revealed that he had worked on a few aspects of his game before flying to England — adjustments that have paid off so far in the five-match series.
It was a memorable day for Team India and their captain. The visitors posted a mammoth first-innings total of 587, with 269 of those runs coming from Gill’s bat. His marathon innings featured 30 fours and three sixes during a 387-ball stay at the crease.
This was Gill’s maiden double century in Test cricket and his second consecutive hundred of the series. Before the series began, there were doubts over his technique in overseas conditions, but he has silenced those critics by scoring 424 runs in just three innings. The Indian skipper currently averages 141.33 in the series.
Technical tweaks working in Gill’s favour
“I worked on a few things at the end of the IPL, which I felt were important before moving into Test cricket,” said Gill after Day 2. “Looking at how things have gone so far, it seems to be working.”
Gill’s day improved further when he took a sharp catch at third slip off Akash Deep’s bowling. India’s fielding was a major concern in the previous Test, but they have started strongly at Edgbaston.
“I didn’t take any slip catches over the last couple of days because I was batting, but it felt good to hold on to those today. Fielding was crucial — we discussed how even being half as good in the last match could have made a big difference,” added Gill.
India are firmly in control of the second Test. England are three down for 77, and with a few more early wickets, India could be well on their way to securing a win — Gill’s first as captain.
