Shukri Conrad has been appointed as the all-format head coach of South Africa’s men’s cricket team, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Friday, May 9. Conrad will lead the team through to the 2027 World Cup, which is set to be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
He takes over from Rob Walter, whose tenure as white-ball coach ended in April. Walter’s final assignment was the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. His departure paves the way for Conrad to oversee all three formats, having previously served as the Test coach.
Conrad excited for the new challenge
“Coaching the Test side has been the greatest privilege of my cricket journey, and to now oversee the white-ball teams as well is something unbelievably special,” Conrad said in a CSA release. “I’m genuinely excited about the prospects that lie ahead. South African cricket has incredible white-ball talent — from our senior players to a promising group of juniors ready to step up for the Proteas. There’s a strong foundation to build on, and I believe we can achieve something special.”
Conrad has already led South Africa to the World Test Championship final, while Walter took the Proteas to the T20 World Cup final last year. Now, the responsibility lies with Conrad to build on that momentum and take the team one step further.
Reflecting on Walter’s contributions, Conrad said: “Rob laid a really good foundation and did some wonderful things. You only have to look at the ICC tournament performances to appreciate that. I’ll try to build on what he started.”
Planning for the future is already underway, Conrad confirmed. “As recently as this morning, I spoke to some of our players at the IPL and overseas about what their year could look like in terms of involvement. Those planning processes have begun and will evolve over time,” he added. “I’m excited to take the good things we’ve done in the Test space and carry them into the white-ball formats.”
