West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced that a new cricket stadium will be built in Siliguri, named after World Cup-winning wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh. The decision came after India’s historic 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup triumph to encourage young athletes, especially from north Bengal.

Announcing the project, Banerjee said, “The ‘Richa Cricket Stadium’ will be built on a 27-acre plot at the Chandmani Tea Estate. This is a way to honour Richa, one of Bengal’s shining sports talents, and also encourage more young cricketers from north Bengal,” as quoted by PTI. She further added that the state government will soon begin construction.

Siliguri, Richa’s hometown, has been celebrating her achievements since India lifted the Women’s World Cup. The 22-year-old has already received the Banga Bhushan award and has been appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the state government, along with a gold chain in recognition of her success. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) also felicitated her in the presence of Sourav Ganguly and Mamata Banerjee.

Richa was one of India’s key performers in the World Cup, scoring 235 runs in eight innings at an average of 39.16 and a strike rate of 133.52. She was rewarded with ₹34 lakh — ₹1 lakh for each run she scored in the final. In that final, she played a crucial knock of 34 runs off 24 balls at a strike rate of 141.66, helping India seal a 52-run win. Her highest score in the tournament came against South Africa, where she made 94 runs.
