Silver lining for Rohit even in brief stay, Kohli needs to remove rust

Rohit Sharma may not have scored big but anyone who has seen him in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last winter will agree he looked much better during his brief stay at the crease in the first ODI against Australia in Perth.

The very first ball was evidence he has trained hard. He was on top of it, switched on and went straight for a single. It was good to see. Even when he was beaten, it did not impact him mentally. The straight drive was proof he had a game left. In all honesty, I will not read too much into the dismissal either. It was a good ball that jumped off a good length and Rohit couldn’t ride the bounce. The Josh Hazelwood delivery could have gotten any batsman out. It can very well happen in Perth and things will surely get better.

Virat Kohli, on the other hand, looked tentative. The shot he played was an attempt at getting off the mark, having been stuck on nought for a few deliveries. Again, it is much too soon but the first assessment is Rohit looked more the part in Perth.

Losing the toss wasn’t ideal, for things will be much easier in the afternoon. But then that’s cricket and that’s how it is. There is no need to call doomsday for that’s not even relevant. Having said that, there will be scrutiny and one expects them to get more into the series in Adelaide.
