Simon Harmer has sustained a knock on his right shoulder, but it’s too early to determine the extent of his injury, it is learnt. The South African off-spinner visited a private hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday for medical examinations. The reports are awaited. Harmer sustained the injury during the first Test in Kolkata, as he dived to stop a ball while fielding.

Harmer was adjudged Player of the Match in the first Test after returning with a match haul of 8/51. Of the scalps he accounted for, six were left-handers. It would be premature to speculate on his availability for the second Test in Guwahati starting on November 22.

Harmer made his Test debut in 2015 before changing track and joining county cricket. The 36-year-old has returned to international cricket as a bowler reborn. He spoke about how a coach in Mumbai played a part in his career revival.

“I wasn’t good enough (for international cricket) and I came back to India in 2016 to work with Umesh Patwal in Mumbai, and I think I discovered a lot about spin bowling that I didn’t know,” Harmer told reporters during the first Test.
