Centuries from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim, and their unbeaten 247-run partnership, put Bangladesh firmly in control at the end of Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. By stumps, Bangladesh had reached a commanding 292 for 3 in 90 overs.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bangladesh made a cautious start but lost their openers early. Shadman Islam and Anamul Haque were dismissed cheaply, while Mominul Haque looked promising before falling for 29. Fast bowler Asitha Fernando and debutant Tharindu Rathnayake claimed the early wickets.
However, Shanto and Mushfiqur batted brilliantly to rebuild the innings and shift the momentum in Bangladesh’s favour. Both batters displayed impressive patience and technique against the Sri Lankan bowlers on a challenging pitch.
Sri Lanka will aim to break the stand early on Day 2
Captain Shanto led from the front with a composed, unbeaten 136 off 260 deliveries, hitting 14 fours and a six. Mushfiqur Rahim, equally resolute, remained not out on 105 from 186 balls, including five boundaries. Together, they ensured no further wickets fell and kept the scoreboard ticking.
Their unbroken partnership has laid a solid foundation for Bangladesh in the series opener. Sri Lanka will aim to break the stand early on Day 2 in an effort to claw their way back into the match. With two big hundreds on the board, Bangladesh will now look to post a formidable first-innings total to put pressure on the hosts.
