The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee has announced an 18-member squad for the first Test match of the upcoming series against Bangladesh, set to begin on 17 June 2025 at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
The squad features six uncapped players, with Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Pavan Rathnayake, and Isitha Wijesundara earning their maiden Test call-ups. Fast bowler Lahiru Kumara has been ruled out due to an injury sustained during a training session, which forced his last-minute withdrawal.
Several capped players have also missed out on selection, including Sadeera Samarawickrama, Jeffrey Vandersay, Nishan Peiris, Vishwa Fernando, and Nishan Madushka.
Akila Dananjaya and Kasun Rajitha have been recalled to the Test side following impressive domestic performances with the ball.
Legendary Angelo Mathews will retire from Test cricket after the first Test match. Mathews made his Test debut at the same venue in 2009 and will conclude his red-ball career at Galle. His retirement follows that of former skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, who played his final Test at Galle earlier this year during the series against Australia.
With the departure of two senior players and the inclusion of a number of fresh faces, this series will serve as a stern test of leadership for newly appointed captain Dhananjaya de Silva. Bangladesh, having secured a series win in Pakistan last year, will be aiming to replicate that success in Sri Lanka.
