Bangladesh levelled the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka with a hard-fought 16-run win in the second game at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, thanks to a match-winning performance from left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam.
Defending a target of 249, Bangladesh saw Sri Lanka build early momentum after the loss of Pathum Nissanka, as Kusal Mendis and Nishan Madushka put together a quick 69-run partnership. However, Tanvir Islam turned the tide by dismissing Madushka and launching a middle-order collapse.
He went on to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in One-Day Internationals, finishing with figures that earned him the Player of the Match accolade. After removing Madushka for 17, he trapped Mendis—who struck a quickfire 56 from 31 balls—using DRS. Tanvir then dismissed Kamindu Mendis, Dunith Wellalage, and Maheesh Theekshana to complete a clinical spell. He became just the second Bangladeshi bowler to take five wickets in an ODI against Sri Lanka, joining Abdur Razzak, who achieved the feat in 2013.
Earlier, Bangladesh put up 249 on the board after electing to bat. Parvez Hossain Emon and Towhid Hridoy both struck half-centuries, while Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s 33 off 21 balls added valuable late runs. Despite a mini-collapse that saw them fall from 190/5 to 248 all out in 45.5 overs, their bowlers ensured the total proved competitive.
With the series now tied at 1-1, both sides will battle for the series win in the final ODI on Tuesday at the same venue.
