
England defeated Sri Lanka by 11 runs (DLS method) in the rain-affected first T20I of the three-match series in Pallekele.
Due to rain and a wet outfield, the series opener was reduced to 17 overs. England won the toss and elected to bowl first. Sri Lanka lost their opener, Kamil Mishara, in the third over. From there, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis took responsibility and tried to provide stability to the innings, but they could add only 52 runs off 28 balls for the second wicket. After that, none of the Sri Lankan batters were able to build significant partnerships, except for Wanindu Hasaranga and captain Dasun Shanaka, who added 31 runs off 24 balls down the order. Mendis was the highest scorer with 37 off 20 balls, including four fours and two sixes. For England, Adil Rashid and Sam Curran took three wickets each, while Jamie Overton and Liam Dawson chipped in with two wickets apiece. Sri Lanka were bundled out for 133 in 16.2 overs.
In reply, Phil Salt and Jos Buttler gave England an aggressive start, adding 36 runs off 17 balls. Salt played the role of anchor, scoring 46 off 35 balls, while Tom Banton provided good support in the middle order with 29 off 15 balls. For Sri Lanka, Eshan Malinga took two wickets. When England’s score reached 125/4, rain intervened again, and they were declared the winners under the DLS method. Adil Rashid was adjudged Player of the Match.
