Yesterday, during a media interaction, young South African women’s all-rounder Annerie Dercksen opened up about being compared to star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp. She said: “I’ve been compared to Kappie a lot and I’m really not sure why. She’s in a class of her own and someone I really look up to, and I see it as a big honour.”

“I’ve got four ODI caps, so at the moment I’m looking to learn and experience as much as I possibly can, soaking in all the situations and knowledge from all the players around me,” she added.

Now, in her sixth ODI innings, Dercksen smashed her maiden fifty in the format, scoring an unbeaten 61 off 60 balls against Sri Lanka in the third ODI of the ongoing Women’s Tri-Nation ODI Series in Colombo.

It was a tremendous knock under pressure by the 24-year-old, and thanks to her effort, South Africa posted a competitive total of 235/9 in 50 overs.

Annerie Dercksen was named the ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year for 2024

Shortly after the innings, Marizanne Kapp shared an Instagram story to appreciate Dercksen’s performance. She reposted a photo of the South Africa Women’s team celebrating the milestone and captioned it: “Big things to come!” followed by three fire emojis.

The story went viral instantly, as fans admired the classy gesture from a legend of the game. For Dercksen, it could be the perfect confidence boost moving forward.

Dercksen was named the ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year for 2024, and this Tri-Nation Series presents a golden opportunity for her to secure a place in the final squad for the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in India in the coming months.

Marizanne Kapp is not part of this series, having been given a rest, and fans are hoping she returns in top form for the mega event.
