Out-of-favour India cricketer Ishan Kishan opened up about his omission from the Indian team, saying the exile left him dejected but also motivated him to push harder after leading Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.
Once a regular across all formats for India, Kishan has been on the sidelines since 2023. The wicketkeeper-batter hammered 517 runs in 10 innings to finish the SMAT as the leading run-scorer. In the final, the Jharkhand skipper smashed a century to help his team clinch the title.
“When I was not selected for the Indian team, I felt quite bad because I was doing well,” Kishan was quoted as saying by Sportstar. “But I told myself that if I am not selected with this sort of performance, then maybe I have to do more. Maybe I have to make my team win. Maybe we have to do well as a unit.”
Having been away from the Indian team, Kishan underlined the importance of staying calm, avoiding frustration and focusing on his goals.
“It’s important that you don’t allow frustration to get to you. This is my message to all the youngsters — frustration is something that will take you one step down, but at the same time, you need to put in a lot of hard work, believe in yourself and focus on what you need to achieve,” he added.
Two members of the senior men’s selection committee were present in the stands at the MCA Stadium in Pune for the SMAT final. Kishan has made a strong case for himself with a string of impressive performances.
