Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur believes that the night games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy should start a little later so that both teams gain the advantage of the dew factor.
Shardul explained his point by saying that even the morning games could start a little later so that both teams can play in dry conditions.
“A night game should start a little later so that, if there’s dew, both teams have that advantage or disadvantage of playing in such conditions. Even the morning games could be pushed a little bit, so the pitches get a bit of sun and then dry out. Then both teams can have those dry conditions. We need to think about it in the longer run,” Shardul said during an interaction with Sportstar.
The evening matches in this year’s tournament are starting at 4.30 p.m., and the toss is becoming a deciding factor in these games, as the team that bowls first has the opportunity to exploit the dry conditions before the dew settles in.
Shardul also spoke about the disadvantages caused by the “odd” timings of the matches.
“The timings are a bit odd. The venue has been used before, so there are a lot of used pitches here; they water them and roll them again. So, when you are playing a morning game, there is a lot of dampness on the pitch, and then it settles down. Even in the evening games, the team bowling first gets dry conditions, and then suddenly dew comes in, making the toss a big factor,” he added.
Hyderabad crushed Mumbai by nine wickets with 49 balls to spare in their recent Super League Group B match. Next, the Shardul Thakur-led Mumbai side will take on Haryana on Sunday, followed by Rajasthan on Tuesday.
