JSW Soorma Hockey Club made a strong start to their Women’s Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Shrachi Rarh Bengal Tigers. Olivia Shannon (38’), Englebert (42’), Captain Salima Tete (44’), and Sonam (47’) scored for Soorma, while Hannah Cotter (7’) netted the lone goal for the Tigers in the first quarter.
Soorma began the game confidently, dominating possession and creating early chances. However, it was the Tigers who struck first when Hannah Cotter capitalized on a free hit in the 7th minute, sending a powerful shot past the keeper. Soorma responded with a penalty corner in the 11th minute, but Penny Squibb’s drag flick was well-defended by the Tigers.
In the second quarter, the Tigers attempted to extend their lead, with Grace Stewart making a strong run and forcing a save from Savita. Soorma regained control, pressuring the Tigers into their half with relentless attacks. They won multiple penalty corners and even scored in the 21st minute, but the goal was disallowed after a video referral revealed interference. Despite being a goal down at halftime, Soorma remained determined to equalize.
The third quarter saw Soorma take charge, scoring three quick goals. Despite early saves by Tigers’ goalkeeper Grace O’Hanlon and a penalty corner attempt from Captain Udita being thwarted by the Soorma defense, the breakthrough came in the 38th minute. Penny Squibb initiated a move from deep, passing to Deepika Soreng, who set up Olivia Shannon to fire into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later, Soorma took the lead with a penalty corner variation finished by Charlotte Englebert. Captain Salima Tete then added another in the 44th minute with a long-range strike from a tight angle, leaving Soorma firmly in control.
The momentum continued in the fourth quarter as Sonam converted a penalty stroke in the 47th minute, extending Soorma’s lead. They maintained their dominance, creating numerous scoring chances and holding their advantage until the final whistle to secure a resounding victory.
