Sophie Devine, captain of New Zealand Women’s team, believes that the White Ferns’ upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup campaign marks a transition period. She highlighted the balance in the side that has a blend of promising young talent and experienced players.
Devine said in her column for the ICC that they hoped to win the title after 25 years.
“This tournament will show the new blood on show in New Zealand as we look to clinch the title for the first time since 2000.”
She applauded the impact of youngsters like Eden Carson and Izzy Gaze in the team. At the same time, she also mentioned the value of experienced campaigners like Maddy Green and Brooke Halliday for the important roles they continue to play.
She also praised the cricket culture of India.
“India’s always such a special place to play cricket, everyone knows how passionate the people are there about the game,” said Devine. “Sri Lanka’s another great country to visit, it’s a vibrant place and we’ve really enjoyed playing there in the past.”
The mega tournament starts on September 30, and New Zealand will play their first match on October 1 against Australia at the Holkar Stadium in Indore.
For better preparation and to get used to the conditions and pitches, New Zealand conducted a training camp in India a few months ago.
“We’re there to do a job, hopefully play some really good cricket, and win over a few fans,” she said.
