Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes Abhimanyu Easwaran will get his chance, as he still has age on his side, and advises him to target the number three spot in the Test team.

Easwaran was one of three players who didn’t get a game in the recently concluded five-match Test series in England. He was the only specialist batter who didn’t feature in a single match on the tour. Sai Sudharsan began the series at number three in Headingley, before Karun Nair replaced him for the next two Tests. Sudharsan then returned to the position for the fourth and fifth Tests. However, the team management was unable to settle the number three debate in the England tour, as neither Sudharsan nor Karun managed to make the position their own.

Easwaran will get his chance: Ganguly

Ganguly believes that the 29-year-old Easwaran could be given a chance at number three.

“He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance,” Ganguly said during a promotional event in Kolkata recently. “I feel batters like Yashasvi (Jaiswal), KL Rahul, (Shubman) Gill, (Rishabh) Pant, and (Ravindra) Jadeja have all scored runs. It’s only the No. 3 slot that has looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried there.”

Easwaran received his first national call-up in the 2021–22 season, but he is still waiting to make his Test debut. Since then, 15 players have earned their maiden caps. He has not only piled up runs for Bengal, but has also performed consistently for India A, scoring 1,865 runs at an average of nearly 40.

The Bengal-based batter will be aiming to perform well in the Duleep Trophy in order to retain his place in the Test squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies.
