Temba Bavuma, who was laid low by a calf strain, has returned to the South African Test squad for the two-match series in India, commencing from November 14.
The South African skipper, who suffered the injury during an ODI in England, couldn’t partake in his side’s two-match Test series in Pakistan. In his absence, Aiden Markram led South Africa to a 1-1 drawn series.
Meanwhile, Prenelan Subrayen, the spinner, and David Bedingham, the middle order bat, have been left out of the 15-member squad. Head coach Shukri Conrad said: “We’ve kept the bulk of the squad that competed in the two-match series against Pakistan. Those players showed real character and fought hard to come from behind and draw that series. “We are anticipating a similar challenge in India, and many of the players who stood up in those conditions will once again be key for us.”
Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Dewald Brevis, Zubayr Hamza and Ryan Rickelton are the rest of the batters in the squad, while Kyle Verreynne is the wicketkeeper. Kagiso Rabada will spearhead the pace attack, with Corbin Bosch and Marco Jansen as the supporting cast. Wiaan Mulder is the seam-bowling all-rounder, with Senuran Muthusamy, Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer turning out to be the vital cogs in the spin department. Muthusamy also averages over 31 with the bat in first-class cricket and has a highest score of 89 in Test cricket.
The first Test will be played from November 14 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The second Test of the series starts on November 22 in Guwahati.
