The Sports Ministry is planning to dismantle Delhi’s iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to free up 102 acres of land for the construction of a state-of-the-art Sports City.

“The stadium will be dismantled. All offices inside the stadium, including the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), will be relocated,” the ministry source told PTI on Monday, November 10.

There is no fixed timeline for the construction of the redevelopment project yet. The project is still in the proposal stage, and construction will begin only after a full assessment and official approval.

The Sports Ministry officials are studying models from Qatar and Australia as both countries have developed modern facilities and robust ecosystems that are capable of hosting global multi-sporting events.

“There is no timeline fixed for the project yet, as it is still in the ideation phase. We are assessing sports cities like the one in Doha. Once that is complete, we will move ahead with the planning phase,” said a source as quoted by The Indian Express.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JLN) recently underwent minor redevelopment and facility upgrades before the Para World Athletics Championships 2025. A new world class Mondo track was installed inside the stadium replacing the old synthetic surface along with another Mondo track in the practice area, and renovations to washrooms, the gym, lifts ,and a jogging area with an estimated cost of around ₹50 crore.

Originally built for the 1982 Asian Games, JLN Stadium has witnessed multiple historic moments. With a seating capacity of 60,000 the stadium has long been considered as an iconic sporting landmark of Indian sports infrastructure. The stadium underwent a major renovation at a cost of ₹961 crore ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and later hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017 also several major cultural events and concerts.

If the proposed project comes into reality which is still in ideation phase then it will serve as a major boost to India’s sports ecosystem and mark a significant step toward the nation’s ambition of becoming a global sporting powerhouse in future.
