Stand-in captain Steve Smith admitted that Australia’s senior players are keen to win the Ashes in England in 2027, though he is unsure if he will still be part of that journey due to his age.
After leading Australia to a 4-1 Ashes series win at home, Smith spoke about the challenge of the next Ashes, which he may face later in his career.
Speaking after the final Test in Sydney, Smith expressed his desire to win the Ashes in England.
“I’m sure everyone’s excited to go there and try and win the Ashes. It’s something that I certainly haven’t done in my career, and something I’d like to tick off. Whether I get there or not is a different question. The squad we’ve had over the last four or five years has been amazing. So hopefully we can keep growing, getting better,” Smith told Fox Cricket.
Mitchell Starc, who is 35, produced a brilliant performance and earned the Player of the Series award, for picking up 31 wickets. Scott Boland and Michael Neser also played crucial roles, especially in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon.
Smith also highlighted the impact of Alex Carey behind the stumps, particularly with the pace attack.
“He was unbelievable with both bat and gloves. Just the way he was able to go up to the stumps, in particular to the quicks… And he just did that so well, and the guys bowling to it just reciprocated and put the ball in the right areas,” Smith said.
Praising the collective effort, Smith added, “Mitchell Starc was sensational, and then supported by everyone that played… We’ve just got a really good depth in our squad, and everyone that gets an opportunity takes it, and it’s just been great to be a part of.”
