Ex-Australia captain Steve Smith has expressed his desire to represent his nation in the Olympics. Smith told Sky Sports that it is not easy for him to get into the T20I squad, but he will try his best.
“It is a goal of mine to try and make that Olympic team in 2028. The team’s doing pretty well at the moment, the Australian T20 team. So it’s going to be tricky to get in there, but you know, just got to keep putting my best foot forward, and we’ll never know.”
He said he was thrilled when he learned that he might get the chance to win a medal for his country in the Olympics. “I’ve watched a lot of Olympics since I was a young kid and really enjoyed watching the Australian athletes go about it. So, you know, when I heard that cricket was going to be a part of it, I was like, that would be really cool to be involved.”
Smith believes that, while the Olympics present a golden opportunity to bring glory to the country on the world stage, there is still a long journey ahead.
“I’ve played in lots of World Cups and Ashes and Border-Gavaskar Trophy and things like that, but yeah, when this popped up, it was something new and another opportunity to represent your country on a world stage. I’d love to be involved in that, but it’s still a fair way away. So, we’ll see.”
Though Smith is a key player for Australia in Test matches, he has retired from ODIs and is not a regular in their T20I squad. His last international T20I appearance was on February 25, 2024, in Auckland against New Zealand.
