Stand-in captain Steve Smith took a cheeky dig at Monty Panesar for his comments ahead of the first Test of the five-match Ashes series, starting in Perth on November 21.
Panesar had urged the England team to make Smith feel guilty about the Sandpapergate scandal of 2018 in Cape Town during the upcoming series.
When asked about the former England spinner’s remarks, Smith’s sarcastic reply left reporters in stitches.
“I am going to go off topic here — who in the room has seen Mastermind, and Monty Panesar on it? Any of you?” Smith said ahead of the Perth Test. “Those of you who have will understand where I am coming from. If you have not, do yourself a favour, because it is pretty comical. Anyone who believes that Athens is in Germany, or that Oliver Twist is a season of the year, or that America is a city…”
In his reply, Smith indirectly referred to Panesar’s responses during his quiz-show appearance, in which he delivered several incorrect and illogical answers.
The video of Smith’s remarks has been circulating on social media on the eve of the first Ashes Test.
Smith is not particularly bothered by Panesar’s comments and is focused on the job in hand.
“It does not really bother me, those comments. That is as far as I will go with that one,” he added.
Australia announced their playing XI on Thursday. Jake Weatherald and Brendan Doggett will be making their debuts, while Marnus Labuschagne returns to his preferred number-three position.
