Following South Africa’s underwhelming performance in the recent Women’s Tri-Nation ODI series in Colombo, seasoned all-rounder Sune Luus has candidly addressed the difficulties her team faced during their time in the subcontinent.

The Proteas Women managed just one win out of four games, and Luus described the tour as “one of the hardest” of their careers due to punishing weather conditions and unfamiliar playing surfaces.

“Upon arrival, we were met with the intense heat and humidity of the subcontinent, making Durban’s weather feel like a breeze,” said Luus, highlighting just how stark the contrast in climate was compared to what the team was accustomed to.

She further elaborated, “In the blazing heat, the weather quickly became a popular talking point, especially given that we would be playing two subcontinental teams in their backyard, where conditions are known to be low, slow, and offer turn.”

Sune Luus scored only 61 runs and took one wicket in the recent Tri-Nation ODI Series

Battling through temperatures in the mid-thirties and humidity levels reaching up to 85%, the Proteas were pushed to their physical limits. “Some players described this tour as one of the hardest tours of their careers, physically,” Luus admitted.

Individually, Luus had a modest campaign, scoring 61 runs across three matches with a highest score of 31 and picking up a solitary wicket.

Despite the challenges, Luus acknowledged the leadership of Captain Laura Wolvaardt as the source of strength for the squad during a testing time. “Under captain Laura Wolvaardt, we also reflected on the team’s values and how we could incorporate them into our daily lives throughout the tour, helping us grow both as individuals and as teammates,” she said.
