Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has lauded Shubman Gill for deciding to play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy immediately after the five-match series in England. Gill is set to lead North Zone in the zonal tournament.
Playing his first series as Test captain, Gill enjoyed a dream run with the bat in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, scoring 754 runs in five matches. Under his leadership, a new-look Indian team fought hard to draw the series 2–2.
Fresh from a long and gruelling Test series, Gill is once again set to return to red-ball cricket.
“Shubman Gill, captaining the North Zone team, is a massive shot in the arm for this tournament. By being available, the Indian skipper is sending the right signal to the other members of the team. It would have been understandable if, after a gruelling tour where five Test matches were crammed into a little over six weeks, he had opted to rest,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.
While Gill, along with players such as Shardul Thakur and Dhruv Jurel, who were part of the England tour, will be in action in the Duleep Trophy, no specialist pacer from that squad will feature in the prestigious red-ball tournament. According to Gavaskar, the decision to rest the pacers is sensible. “The fast bowlers not playing is good thinking, as it has been an unusually hot summer in England, thanks to global warming, and their energies must have been expended after the untiring spells they bowled throughout the series,” he noted.
The Duleep Trophy 2025 will get underway on 28 August, with Gill-led North Zone taking on East Zone in the opening match of the tournament.
